Ithaca is one of the cities of New York that nestled in the beautiful Finger Lakes region. It is almost a 4 hours drive from New York City. This is where education meets nature in the most harmonious way. While it’s home to prestigious institutions like Cornell University, what really grabs your attention here are the waterfalls, gorges, and scenic trails that pop up at every turn.
Although it has multiple spots to discover, I would say it starts with Buttermilk Falls State Park. The most exciting part of it is standing in front of its cascading falls, feeling the mist on your face. But you have to take a short hike. After a short drive, you will see Taughannock Falls. This is one of the tallest waterfalls in the eastern U.S. and an absolute must-see spot.
Don’t forget about downtown Ithaca which offers its own blend of artsy charm. For shopping lovers try to go to Ithaca Commons ( a vibrant pedestrian mall), where you’ll find unique shops, quirky boutiques, and cozy cafes. If you’re into farm-to-table dining, you’re in luck. This park is home to deep gorges, dramatic cliffs, and waterfalls like the Genesee River.
If you’re craving a mix of adventure and relaxation, Letchworth is the best place to be. Whether you’re hiking along its scenic trails, picnicking by the waterfalls, or even taking a hot air balloon ride (seriously, it’s incredible!), the park has something for everyone. For the photo lovers, trust me, it’s the kind of place where you’ll want to stop every five minutes just to take pictures.

Let me tell you some secrets. One of the best ways to truly experience Niagara Falls is by taking the Maid of the Mist boat tour. You can get so close to the falls that you’ll feel the mist soak you. Trust me, it’s a thrilling and unforgettable experience. If you rather keep your feet on the ground then try Cave of the Winds. It lets you walk along a wooden platform, bringing you just a few feet away from the roaring waters. Both options offer an up-close, awe-inspiring view of this natural wonder!
I don’t know if you’ve seen photos or videos of Niagara Falls, but nothing can beat seeing it in person. The roar of the water, the cool mist, and the sheer size of the falls are one of those experiences that will leave you in awe.

The best time to picnic is late spring to early fall ( May to October). I prefer late fall (the crowds thin out after summer). Summer (June to August) is ideal for fishing and boating, with warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine. Whether you’re into nature, water activities, or just need some quiet time, Seneca Lake has something for everyone.
6. Catskill Mountains: A Rustic Escape into Nature

It’s the perfect place to unwind and take it all in after a day of exploring.
